Movie Licensing

Dear Teachers, Students, and Parents,

The Principia Copyright Awareness Team (PCAT) is a dual-campus committee whose purpose is to learn about and share information regarding copyright issues and to promote the ethical use of copyrighted materials.

PCAT would like to inform you of Principia's efforts to stay within copyright law regarding showing movies on the St. Louis campus.  The Principia School pays two movie licensing companies to allow us to show movies for non-educational purposes legally on our campus.  Examples of non-educational purposes are movies shown: at the after-school care program, at Middle or Upper School social events, during the summers at the Summertime Discovery program, or in classrooms as rewards or as part of a party.  Included in this letter is a list of movie distributors that we are covered to show on our campus. To remain within copyright law, no movies from any other distributors should be shown on our campus in a non-educational setting.  If you have a question as to whether a movie is covered under our licensing agreements, please feel free to contact Anne Hedgepeth or Judy Barker.

We thank you for your support of this copyright compliance.

Sincerely,
PCAT
Principia Copyright Awareness Team

Movie Licensing on the St. Louis Campus

11/07:  Now covered by two different licenses.  Anne will put brief explanation of background here and put an alphabetical listing of what producers and distributors are within our coverage.  Will also send out information to our community about how we are covered and for what.  Will draft something on our wiki for review by all.  Will one communication suffice, or will we need a slightly different one for our parent community?  Would be good to go out from Anne and Judy?  or PCAT?

Sue - consider asking that parents contact someone (Anne/Judy) if showing on campus to be sure that we are covered for the movie they want to show - good to keep track of who is showing what.

ONLY for St. Louis campus, not college campus.

Swank is Movie Licensing for St. Louis campus.  College campus still grappling with licensing issues for showing movies in the dorms.  In the process of trying to get verification - currently showing in individual dorm rooms, not living rooms.  Seeking other options.

Cathy checking with other colleges (Mount Holyoke and another in the east).  Think of dorm as their home and not being used for public service and not charging, so showing.  NOT technically accurate and not in accord with Swank's agreement.  We could be liable.  So we are not doing that.

We should ask Phil Riley to give us guidance, since all of this is subject to interpretation.  Mount Holyoke has a reasonable argument.  Chestnut was going to contact Phil, but not sure what progress was made.  Need to be careful because Swank would have us pay all the time - schools are an easy target and

Very cool wiki. There are a couple sites that I think should be added to your wiki if you want... http://www.movieretriever.com and http://www.answerblip.com
